Rare Find!

Lovely pair of vintage Maruni red lacquerware vase shaped bookends with a beautiful inlaid metal floral decoration. These vase/bookends were made in the late 40's/early 50's in Occupied Japan. The bottoms are marked "Made by Hand in Occupied Japan, Maruni, patented Lacquerware."  I am in awe of these beauties when I think of how they were being made in Japan while it was occupied with the Allied troops and so much history was taking place. It's hard to believe that we can still have pieces of this short period of time in our homes today! They measure approximately 7"H x 5.5"W x 7"L and overall are in very good condition. There is some black lacquer loss inside one of the vases and one or two small nicks on the edges of the vases. (See photos.)

These unusual bookends were found in the estate sale of a elderly lady who had spent many years living in Japan due to family members being stationed there in the Army. There are several other Japanese pieces from this home on my site. I also have some additional Occupied Japan pieces. Thank you for looking!
