These vintage beauties are a definite rarity! From hours of research, I finally deducted that they were manufactured in Germany. They are marked on back with the Lion/Sun symbol along with the word 'Handarbeit' which is a German word for hand made/hand decorated. Each plate has its own Fragonard Courting Couple along with a Fragonard signature. The Fragonard scenes on each plate are outlined in a beautiful yellow and gold with reticulated edging around the plates. These plates would be an awesome addition to any plate collection or would add a bold touch of elegance to any decor style.
2 German Fragonard Courting Couple plates/Love Story
This beautiful plate duo features the Fragonard Love Story Motif sometimes referred to as the Courting Couple. Fragonard, a French painter of the Rococo style, was very popular in the latter half of the 18th century. Rococo painters featured pastoral landscapes and incorporated in their paintings myths of love, cherubs, cupids, venus and mythical creatures. The works of the Rococo painters are highly sought after and are often found on china plates, teacups, and vases.
These particular plates were found in a historical house in downtown Mobile, AL.
